Q&A With Aaron Hearn

Personal Trainer at Premier Gym + Fitness

For anyone who hasn’t met you yet – can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I've been into sports my whole life, mainly football and cricket, however I only started taking fitness seriously when I was at University. I was always self-conscious about my weight and appearance growing up and this is where I feel I can relate to a lot of people when starting their fitness journey.

What made you want to get back into personal training?

After 4 years of being in management, I missed being on the gym floor and being able to help members. After getting into HYROX and falling in love with training again, I wanted to be able to help people in the same way I was able to push myself.

What can people expect from your PT sessions?

Knowledge, Support and Results. There may be some fun sprinkled in there somewhere.

You’re known for your spin classes – what’s your ultimate spin track?

It's got to be "DJ Turn It Up" by Dimension - A crazy energetic jump track I like to chuck in at the end of a class to make sure everyone leaves the cycle studio feeling pumped.

You’ve recently got into HYROX – what do you love about it?

For a while I was training with no real goal; I was weight training with no other aim than to feel better about how I looked in the mirror. I then took up running as a form of stress relief and was trying to run a 5km PB every time I laced up. There was no real structure or end goal, no real sense of achievement.

When I was offered to take part in a HYROX simulation, I thought "why not? How hard can it be?"

After completing the sim, I realised that you can look fit without being fit. This is where I fell in love with HYROX, I was able to combine my strength training with my running and give it a sense of purpose.

Do you have a favourite HYROX event or moment?

I have a few, being able to travel to different countries with friends who are also into HYROX and being able to support them and see them achieve personal bests and being part of their journey as well as them being a part of mine is amazing. However, I think my favourite moment so far had to have been the feeling of running up to the finish podium on my first solo race.

What’s your advice for someone thinking about starting PT?

Have a clear goal in mind and be committed to seeing it through. Commitment and accountability go hand in hand with success.

What do you enjoy most about working with members?

When you see members start to realise that they're capable of more than they originally believed, seeing that spark and progression makes it all worth while.

What are your own current fitness goals?

I'm sure there are going to be many more HYROX races in the near future where I want to achieve a sub-70 minute finish time. I also have a Half Marathon in May to train for along with a 21km Spartan Race in August.

Anything else you’d like members to know?

Even if you're not interested in PT sessions or programmes, I am back on the gym floor to help so please come up to me with any questions you may have about your training.
