Meet Helen, Our Saturday Receptionist
Helen is a familiar face at Premier Gym every Saturday, but when she's not behind reception, you'll often find her in a Reformer Pilates or Group Cycle class. We caught up with Helen to chat about her fitness journey, building confidence, and the positive impact exercise has had on her life.
What inspired you to start Reformer Pilates, and how has it influenced both your physical and mental wellbeing?
I started Reformer Pilates because I wanted to feel stronger in myself again — both physically and mentally. I was looking for something that would challenge me while helping me reconnect with my body in a positive way. Since starting, I've felt stronger, more confident, and genuinely proud of myself for showing up consistently. It's become an important part of my routine and has given me a real sense of achievement.
Alongside Reformer Pilates, you're a regular in our Group Cycle classes. What is it about cycling that keeps you coming back?
Group Cycle is my complete reset button. The energy in the room, the music, and the atmosphere allow me to switch off from everything else for 45 minutes and focus purely on myself. It helps me mentally just as much as it does physically. I always leave feeling clearer, lighter, and like I've let go of whatever I walked in carrying.
Many people feel nervous about starting their fitness journey. What would you say to someone who's lacking confidence and considering joining a gym for the first time?
I'd tell them that every single person starts somewhere, and honestly, the hardest part is simply walking through the door for the first time. Once you do, you quickly realise that nobody is judging you — everyone is focused on their own journey. Confidence doesn't come before you start; confidence comes because you started.
What changes have you noticed in yourself outside of the gym since committing to regular training?
I've noticed that I carry myself differently. I'm more confident, more disciplined, and mentally stronger. Training has become less about appearance and more about how I feel within myself, and that mindset shift has made a huge difference in my life. The benefits go far beyond the gym floor.
Finally, if you had to describe how you feel after a class in just three words, what would they be?
Empowered, calm, accomplished.
I feel empowered because I get stronger every time I train. I feel calm because exercise completely clears my head. And I feel accomplished because, no matter what kind of day I've had, I still showed up for myself.
